Ferongla the Forgotten City

As recited by the bard Petrosius Ulsnesos

Beyond the seas,
Aloft the tallest the mountain,
laid a place sprawling with life
as water in a fountain.

The people had nothing to fear,
no danger ever got near,
the gods protected them like a faithful guard dog
until one child got lost, blind man in the fog.

Ferongla, the Forgotten City,
that it would end such is much a pity.
Delusions and cowardice,
led evil to it, as rotten flesh draws flies.

One man, never forgiven,
grew up having to steal for a livin',
never learned morality, never seen good,
always lived on the bottom with the soot.

At the dawn of his youth,
a hooded man approached him,
offered much gold,
for which Yullon was chroachin'.

Ferongla, the Forgotten City,
that it would end such is much a pity.
Delusions and cowardice,
led evil to it, as rotten flesh draws flies.

Yullon's task was simple,
yet dangerous to accomplish,
the King had to die,
for reasons most selfish.

Yullon drew the blade,
this was the moment.
Ferongla was thrown into chaos,
anarchism, death, arranged by the state's opponent.

Ferongla, the Forgotten City,
that it would end such is much a pity.
Delusions and cowardice,
led evil to it, as rotten flesh draws flies.

The city now lays ruined,
no inhabitant remains,
Man, woman and child
all were slain.

Now one lonely shadow,
stands upon the tallest spire.
A whole civilization,
destroyed by one mans desire.

Ferongla, the Forgotten City,
that it would end such is much a pity.
Delusions and cowardice,
led evil to it, as rotten flesh draws flies.

The public opinion on the song/poem is very different from community to community, which has led to it's pattern of popularity being kind of strange. In the southern fiefdoms, it is often mentioned and performed, and becomes gradually less well-known and well-liked towards the north and east. Typically, it is not well-liked in small, less educated communities, while most members of the nobility find much delight in listening to a bard performing it.

It is unknown where Petrosius got inspiration from, but it is believed to have been written in response to a requirement for entering the Musician's Guild of Nander.
